Updated silk icon pack for Moodle 2

Just been on my dev server at home to upload the updated version of the silk icon pack mentioned a couple of posts back  so without further ado see the link below…

You can put the icons into any Moodle 2 theme, just find your theme folder and rename the following folders…

  • pix_core
  • pix_plugins

Then extract the new ones from the archive and rebuild your theme caches for the changes to take effect.

There’s only a couple of differences over Gareth’s original set; I’ve added some more file type icons, replaced a couple of the silk icons (circular left \ right arrows etc) and added some more module icons that I use on my site.

If you find it useful leave a comment in the usual place 🙂

I’m relatively new to Moodle and in the process of building my first course. I sure like the idea of changing the icons and this looks like a real good set.

I know how to change the pix_core and pix_plugins folders as you describe. But I don’t know what you mean by “rebuild your theme caches.”

How do I do that? Is it relatively easy with little risk of creating problems with my course?

    Thanks … Bernie Perry

      Hi Bernie,

Do you have administrator access to your Moodle site? To change the icons you need to replace files on the server, you’ll need to navigate to the “theme” folder then find the name of the theme you’re using (e.g. “aardvark”) Inside there you should then see the two folders named above. Rename the old ones (e..g put “old” at the end of each) then copy the new ones in from my ZIP file.

As for clearing the cache, log in as admin on the Moodle site then go to Site administration > Appearance > Theme > Theme selector menu and click the “Clear Theme Caches” button. Your new icons will then take effect 🙂

Credit goes to Gareth J M Saunders and the University of St Andrews web team for the core icon pack, I tweaked it slightly and added some common modules in for added completeness, glad people have found it useful 🙂
